Missouri sales tax holidays

Missouri runs two sales tax holidays a year: the back-to-school weekend that always opens on the first Friday in August, and a full week every April when Energy Star appliances come tax-free.

Back to School Sales Tax Holiday

Back to school

August 7–9, 2026

Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9

This year’swindow ended

2027 dates aren't posted yet — by law the holiday always runs from the first Friday in August through that Sunday, and the Department of Revenue confirms each year's weekend on its holiday page in summer.

Do online orders count?

Yes — an online or mail order qualifies when you buy and pay for the item during the holiday, even if delivery comes after the weekend ends.

What qualifies

Back to School Sales Tax Holiday — qualifying rules
Item Price cap Tax status
Clothing & footwear $100 or less per article — an item priced at exactly $100 still qualifies, and cloth for school uniforms counts too $100 Exempt
School supplies the $50 limit runs per purchase of supplies, not per pencil $50 Exempt
Textbooks, notebooks, book bags & backpacks the state files these under school supplies, so they share that $50 limit $50 Exempt
Personal computers, tablets & peripherals $1,500 or less per item — printers, monitors, keyboards, mice and speakers count $1,500 Exempt
Computer software $350 Exempt
Graphing calculators $150 Exempt
Watches, jewelry, handbags & umbrellas Not exempt
Scarves, ties, headbands & belt buckles state law leaves these out of its definition of clothing Not exempt
Radios, CD players, headphones & sporting equipment Not exempt
Phones, copiers, office equipment & furniture Not exempt
  • Since January 1, 2023 the holiday takes off state and local sales tax across Missouri, so there's no city or county list to check first.
  • Layaway counts when the final payment lands during the weekend, and a rain check only works if you order and pay for the item during the holiday itself.
  • You don't have to live in Missouri to shop the holiday — anyone at the register gets the same break.

Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday

Energy Star

April 19–25, 2027

Monday, April 19 through Sunday, April 25

Starts in 247 days

No guessing on this one — state law pins the holiday to April 19 through April 25 every single year, so the 2027 week is already on the calendar.

Do online orders count?

Yes — buy and pay during the seven days and the appliance qualifies, even if it's delivered or installed weeks later.

What qualifies

Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday — qualifying rules
Item Price cap Tax status
Energy Star clothes washers & dryers $1,500 Exempt
Energy Star refrigerators & freezers $1,500 Exempt
Energy Star dishwashers $1,500 Exempt
Energy Star air conditioners & furnaces $1,500 Exempt
Energy Star water heaters $1,500 Exempt
Energy Star ovens, ranges & stoves $1,500 Exempt
Appliances without the Energy Star label the label is the whole test — a model that misses it pays full tax Not exempt
Microwaves, dehumidifiers & humidifiers Not exempt
Ice makers, water softeners & wine coolers Not exempt
Coffee makers, bread machines & deep fryers Not exempt
  • The $1,500 isn't a cliff: on a $1,900 refrigerator the first $1,500 comes tax-free and you pay tax only on the $400 above it.
  • Mandatory shipping and handling charges count toward that $1,500, so a big delivery fee can push part of the price into taxable territory.
  • No limit on how many appliances you buy, and since January 1, 2023 the week takes off state and local sales tax alike.

Missouri questions, answered

When was Missouri's 2026 tax-free weekend?

August 7–9, 2026, from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. State law fixes it as the first Friday in August through that Sunday, so 2027's should land the same way.

Do laptops and tablets qualify?

Yes. Personal computers and their peripherals qualify at $1,500 or less per item, computer software at $350 or less, and graphing calculators at $150 or less.

Is there a limit on how much I can spend?

No total limit on the cart. The caps are per item — clothing at $100 or less each, computers at $1,500 or less each. School supplies are the odd one out: that $50 limit applies per purchase of supplies rather than per item.

Do city and county sales taxes come off too?

Yes. Since January 1, 2023 both Missouri holidays skip state and local sales and use tax everywhere in the state, so you don't need to check whether your town opted in.

Does buying online count?

Yes — order and pay during the holiday and the exemption sticks, even if the delivery shows up the following week.

What is the Show-Me Green holiday?

A separate seven-day holiday every April 19–25 on Energy Star certified new appliances — washers, dryers, fridges, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, ovens, air conditioners and furnaces — with the first $1,500 of each appliance tax-free.
