Nevada sales tax holidays

Nevada has no tax-free weekend for the general public — the state's one sales tax holiday, over Nevada Day, is limited to active Nevada National Guard members and close relatives living with them, and even they have to pay the tax first and claim it back.

Nevada Day Sales Tax Exemption for the Nevada National Guard

Storewide

October 30 – November 1, 2026

Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1

Starts in 76 days

2027 dates aren't posted yet — Nevada Day is observed on the last Friday in October, and the Department of Taxation posts each year's three-day window along with the September deadline for exemption letters.

Do online orders count?

There's no tax-free checkout here, online or in a store — Nevada retailers must charge and collect sales tax as usual, even if you show them your exemption letter. If you're an eligible Guard member or qualifying relative, you pay the tax, keep every receipt, and then ask the Department of Taxation for a refund of the Nevada sales tax within 30 calendar days of each purchase. Online orders work the same way, as long as the goods are delivered to you in Nevada during the three-day window.

What qualifies

Purchases by everyone else in Nevada there is no public tax-free weekend in Nevada Not exempt
Purchases made outside Nevada if a Nevada retailer didn't collect Nevada sales tax, there's nothing to refund Not exempt
Purchases made before October 30 or after November 1 Not exempt
Purchases by a member whose exemption letter never went through the unit has to submit the application by September 15, 2026 Not exempt
  • This is the honest headline: if you're not in the Nevada National Guard or living with someone who is, October 30 – November 1 is just an ordinary shopping weekend in Nevada.
  • The exemption letter is the gate, and you can't request it yourself — your unit's full-time administrative staff has to verify and submit the application to the Department, at least 45 days before Nevada Day. For 2026 that deadline is September 15.
  • Since July 1, 2023 the letter no longer works at the register. Retailers don't need to see it, and they're required to charge tax anyway; the letter goes in with your refund request instead.
  • Refund requests go to the Department with a copy of the exemption letter and a copy of every receipt showing the buyer's name, the retailer's name and address, the purchase date, the price, and the tax collected.
  • Big purchases can qualify too, but a vehicle trade-in already cuts the sales tax you paid — so it also cuts the refund you can claim back.

Nevada questions, answered

Does Nevada have a tax-free weekend for shoppers?

No. Nevada's only sales tax holiday is the Nevada Day exemption for the Nevada National Guard. If you're not a Guard member or a qualifying relative, there's no tax-free shopping window in Nevada at any point in the year.

Who actually qualifies?

Two groups. Members of the Nevada National Guard on active status who are Nevada residents, and relatives within the first degree — a parent, child, or spouse's parent or child — who live in the same Nevada home as that member and are named on the exemption letter.

Do I get the discount at the register?

No. Since July 2023, retailers are required to charge and collect sales tax even if you hand them the exemption letter. You pay full price at checkout and claim the tax back afterward, so budget for the tax on the day.

How do I get the money back?

Submit a refund request to the Department of Taxation no later than 30 calendar days after each purchase date, attaching your exemption letter and every receipt. The receipt needs the buyer's name, the retailer's name and address, the date, the price, and the tax collected.

What's the deadline for the exemption letter?

September 15, 2026 — 45 days before Nevada Day is observed. Ask your unit's full-time administrative staff; the Department doesn't accept applications directly from individual members, so leaving it late means missing the holiday entirely.

Do online orders count?

Yes, within limits. The refund covers Nevada sales tax on sales made in Nevada or delivered to you in Nevada during October 30 – November 1. Buy from an out-of-state seller who never collected Nevada sales tax and there's nothing to refund.
