Friday, July 30 through Sunday, August 1

2028 dates aren't posted yet — the holiday runs a Friday-through-Sunday weekend at the end of July, and the Department of Revenue posts each year's window on its sales tax holiday page well ahead of time.

Do online orders count?

Yes — the Department of Revenue says items sold online are eligible. Order and pay during the weekend and the item qualifies even if the box shows up later, as long as it's headed to a Tennessee address.

  • Tennessee's caps are generous at the edge: the rule is "$100 or less," so a shirt with a $100.00 sticker still rings up tax-free — unlike states that require the price to fall under the line.
  • The holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
  • Tennessee has run this weekend every year since 2006, and the state has already posted the 2027 dates.

Tennessee questions, answered

Does Amazon count for Tennessee's tax-free weekend?

Yes. The Department of Revenue says items sold online are eligible, so order and pay during the weekend and the exemption sticks even if delivery comes later. The item has to be coming to you in Tennessee.

Do laptops and tablets qualify?

Yes — computers, laptops, and tablets priced at $1,500 or less are tax-free, as long as they're for personal use. Software sold on its own, storage media, and printer supplies are not.

Is there a limit on how much I can buy?

The limits are per item, not per receipt: each piece of clothing or each school supply has to be $100 or less, and a computer $1,500 or less. And Tennessee's cap is "or less," so an item priced at exactly $100 still qualifies.

How much does the holiday actually save me?

Close to 10 percent. Qualifying items skip both the state and the local sales tax, which is the bulk of what you'd normally pay at a Tennessee register.

Can I buy supplies for my business during the holiday?

No. The Department of Revenue is direct about it — all purchases have to be for personal use, not for a business or trade.

When is the next Tennessee tax-free weekend?

July 30 through August 1, 2027 — the state has already posted those dates. It runs 12:01 a.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, same as always.
