Virginia sales tax holidays

Virginia squeezes three shopping lists into one weekend every August — school clothes and supplies, hurricane and emergency gear, and Energy Star and WaterSense products all come off tax on the same three days.

Virginia Sales Tax Holiday — School Supplies, Clothing & Footwear

Back to school

August 6–8, 2027

Friday, August 6 through Sunday, August 8

Starts in 356 days

State law sets the holiday for the first Friday in August through the following Sunday, and that law runs until July 1, 2030 — Virginia Tax confirms each year's exact window on its sales tax holiday page a few weeks ahead.

Do online orders count?

Yes — Virginia Tax says the savings apply whether you shop online, in a store, by mail, or by phone. An online order counts if you order and pay and the seller accepts the order during the weekend, even if delivery comes later.

Virginia questions, answered

Is Virginia's tax-free weekend really three holidays?

It's one weekend with three shopping lists. August 7–9, 2026 covers school supplies and clothing, hurricane and emergency preparedness gear, and Energy Star and WaterSense products all at once — Virginia calls it the combined sales tax holiday.

Do backpacks count as clothing under the $100 cap?

No. Book bags, messenger bags, totes, and lunch boxes sit on Virginia's school-supply list, which caps at $20 per item. The $100 cap is for clothing and footwear.

Do laptops or tablets qualify?

No — Virginia's school-supply list specifically excludes computers. Flash drives, discs, and other storage media do qualify, as long as each one is $20 or less.

Does shipping push me over the price cap?

No. Virginia leaves shipping and handling out of the item price for holiday purposes, so a $95 dress with a $14 delivery fee still qualifies — and the delivery charge comes off tax too.

Does Amazon count?

Yes. Online, mail, and phone orders qualify when you order and pay and the seller accepts the order during the weekend, even if the package arrives later.

When is the 2027 holiday?

August 6–8, 2027. State law fixes the holiday at the first Friday in August through the following Sunday, and that law is on the books through July 1, 2030.
